"It is believing in dignity - in our own and in that of those around us - that keeps us going."

In Shadows of War author Carolyn Nordstrom discusses self dignity briefly but in a way that touched my heart. Dignity is defined as “the quality or state of being worthy of esteem or respect.” I have experienced a few occasions in my life when this quote could have helped me along during hard times. I am the type of person who always wants to help people, whether I know these people or not. When I am asked to do something, I rarely say no. When my friends hurt, I hurt, and I am always willing to help.

During my lifetime, I have been told that I am a strong, independent girl who has the heart of a giant. I have had personal sadness and have had to overcome a few obstacles along my way, but these were character-building experiences that no one could go through for me. My family and friends have also had struggles, and I have also been made stronger while watching and helping these people that I love. Then, there are those who were once strangers to me that I hope I have helped in some way. These stories are real life experiences over my eighteen years that have helped make me who I am. In these stories, sometimes I was on the giving end of showing respect and care to others. Sometimes I was on the receiving end.
